Activities and Events

Are there any regular activities and what are they?

There are regular events every week at both Muircroft properties. We prefer to let tenants decide what they would like to do and help enable those activities to take place, rather than deciding for them.

Each year the Board of Muircroft Housing Association provides financial support to run tenant engagement and social events. We encourage tenants to work with their Housing Support Officer to suggest new ideas and help run new activities.

VE Day 80 - Celebrations at Muir House and Priest Croft, June 2025

This year we asked our tenants to tell us if they remembered anything about VE Day and this is what they told us...

Mary told us...

Mary lived in London during the war, her mum wouldn’t enter the air raid shelters so Mary and her siblings stayed with her Nan, near the Thames.

They would go down into the air raid shelters around 5pm each evening and spend the night with 500 people. They would wait until they got the all clear siren at 7am before going home and getting ready for a day at school.  Often after little or no sleep, as the older people in the air raid shelters would sing songs all night long.

Mary remembers walking to school after a night in the air raid shelter and the children would all play a game of who could find the biggest bit of shrapnel before they got to school.

Mary remembers a lovely big street party to celebrate the end of the war. She said there were flags and banners and lovely food particularly the sandwiches. She wonders where they managed to get all that nice food as they were still rationed and even remembers eating toffee carrots instead of toffee apples.

Her Mum and Dad celebrated VE day outside Buckingham Palace and didn’t come home until the next day.

Betty told us...

"Our Dad, when he wasn’t at work, he would be a Warden at night, just checking everything was okay, we would listen for him coming home and so we could get the big coat he wore to put on the bed and warm us up. I didn’t manage it often as I used to fall asleep.

When it got really bad and we had an air raid shelter built in our garden, mostly underground. If our dad was out our Mam didn’t like going in the shelter. We had a bay window and put the sofa upside down and hid under the sofa in case the glass shattered, I remember it as being good fun."

Olive told us...

Olive can remember her mother was quite unwell on VE Day, but her father put a seat outside the front of the house so that she could enjoy the street party to celebrate the end of the war. She can remember her mother had a port and lemon in one hand and a cigarette in the other as she enjoyed the celebrations.

Ted told us...

"I remember the time leading up to D Day.  I was in Falmouth, Cornwall at the time, which was a base for the D Day invasion force.  Many American troops were stationed on the green opposite my home, in barrack huts.

On the 9th June the whole area was suddenly deserted.  We took a look at the barracks and found many personal possessions left on beds and tables. I found some unposted postcards written to the USA, describing leave the men had had in London after many weeks of invasion training. I will never forget the ghostly silent barrack rooms".

    How do I find out about activities and events?

    We post weekly event bulletins on noticeboards in communal areas of both properties which contain information on upcoming events.

    What support will I get to go along to activities and events whilst I’m still settling in?

    Our Housing Support Officers will encourage newly arrived tenants to join in social activities, if they wish to. They can also help to find a fellow tenant ‘buddy’ to make sure you don’t feel awkward at getting to know people and joining in, but only if you feel it would be helpful.
